Move yourself. If you can't, read your contract twice.

It is virtually impossible to control (or understand) your move when you use Assurance Van Lines. While your deposit is refundable (9+ days before your first available move date) they will tell you that the move includes $10K of insurance, your stuff should arrive within 2 to 5 days, and the estimated cost will be accurate as long as you properly represented the stuff you need to move.

The reality is that the insurance only covers $.60/pound. This means you will only get $20 if they completely destroy your $500 TV. There is no guaranteed delivery date. They will aim to deliver within a month of the first date you are able to accept delivery. If you aren't available to accept delivery they will charge you $650/day. If they take longer than a month to deliver they may pay you $50 for each day they are late. The price they quote is only accurate if the movers do a good job loading your boxes (i.e. the movers charge for the space used on the truck vs the cubic feet of the items that Assurance quoted), if they can park whatever vehicle they choose to use within 100 feet of your front door and if they don't have to ascend/descend more than 12 steps on either side. These extra charges can become significant fast. For example, if they pickup and deliver with a semi truck and they can't get the semi within 100 feet of your pickup and delivery locations, there is an extra $700 fee.

Now the kicker... Your contract with Assurance Van Lines indicates that all contract terms are overridden by the carrier's terms. You won't know the carrier until a day before they show up to load your stuff. They do not provide their terms in advance and so you will need to read them while the movers are waiting and they can charge you for the wait. If you don't agree with the terms you won't get your deposit back.

In our specific case they picked up our stuff on the date we originally requested but they claimed our stuff took up more space than was estimated by Assurance and tried to charge us an additional $230. We rushed to get to our destination as we were left with the impression that they would piggy back our stuff with another load headed in our direction that weekend. This was not the case. 1 week later we called for a move status and we were informed that our stuff was still in Seattle. They had not assigned a driver and weren't sure if one would be assigned for another week or two. Multiple times they said they would call us with an update but we never received a single call from Assurance Van Lines or the carrier. We had to call each week asking for a status. In the end, it took them 17 days to move our stuff. Luckily we had packed everything in heavy duty moving boxes because the cardboard boxes were destroyed. They were crushed as if dropped from a height. A handful of them were also punched through. By some miracle everything arrived and only 7 items were damaged. We have submitted a claim but expect at most we will get $20 for the $300 of damage done.

Everyone we talked to was friendly and after some arguing with the movers they agreed to move us for the price Assurance had quoted. The lack of communication, the long wait, and the state of our stuff upon arrival has convinced us to never use a moving company again. If you have no choice but to use movers and you can't afford to hire one of the more reputable firms, you may want to still consider Assurance Van Lines.
